Ski is not familiar in tropical country, because there is no snow. I usually see snow or someone skiing through TV or movie. Then, I have a dream to touch snow someday. My dream was becoming true on December 28, 2012, when I was landing in Spokane airport. I was so excited to see the snow. I didn’t really care about the cold temperature. Luckily, my landlord picked up me in the airport and prepared a thick jacket.
On February 2013, I had an opportunity to do ski for the first time. I and other international students went to Lookout Pass Mountain in the morning by bus. The cost of this trip was $95 including transportation, gear renting, ski training, drink, and snacks. We were suggested to bring our lunch and extra clothes.
When we arrived in ski place, the gear was ready to use. Our guide gave an explanation how to use the gear, including shoes and ski stick. Ski shoes is really tight and rigid, I felt like a robot. After, we wore our ski gear we had training how to ski. At first, we didn’t really use our ski stick we focused to climb the hill, slide downhill, and stop by making pizza form. It was hard in the beginning, I was falling down for many time. Moreover, it was fun. We didn’t need to climb the hill again, because we used cart lift to go up. Then we were skiing downhill and using our ski stick to make it faster. Yeaaahhhhh… it was really awesome.
On February 2015, I had an opportunity to participate in women’s cross country ski that was held by outdoor recreation center (ORC) Washington state university (WSU) in the special month for women. The cost of this trip was $45, including transportation and ski gear. We suggested bringing our lunch, snacks, drink, and extra clothes. We used ski gear from ORC and prepared them before we leave. The shoes was different with downhill ski, it looked like a sport shoes instead of a robot shoes. Then, all of the gears were loaded into ORC’s car. There were 2 instructors and 5 other participants. We drove a minivan to go to Schweitzer Mountain.
At first, we learned how to ski and stop. There was a special trail for cross country ski, but there was no cart lift like downhill ski. You need to pay extra money to used cart lift for downhill ski. So, this cross country ski looked like hiking in the snow using ski gear. The benefit of cross country ski was seeing beautiful view, chatting with other participants, and enjoying the trip. However, it was more tired than downhill ski. If I need to choose between downhill ski and cross country ski, I prefer cross country ski. It was amazing, I felt really bless to have this opportunity. Someday, I will miss snow and ski.
